God's mercy and forgiveness heal constantly our relationship with Him.

8"Open shame belongs to us, O Lord, to our kings, our princes and our fathers, because we have sinned against You. 9"To the Lord our God belong compassion and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against Him; 10nor have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in His teachings which He set before us through His servants the prophets.…
-Daniel 9:8-10

The Christian path is not about defining God but of enlarging our idea of God.  Even with the help of doctrine, ritual, good deeds, and moral certainties, without the experience of God’s mercy and forgiveness, we do not really know who God is.

Thomas Keating

We often try to define God and limit His glory in a dictionary, failing then to experience His fullness in our lives. Missing the point of how our relationship with Him could be. We then become afraid and anxious of our failures in His sight, setting then for ourselves standard of men rather than of God, forgetting to realize the mercy and grace of God are given to us not by our own merit but because He simply loves us.
